1945年8月，史蒂夫·马丁出生在德克萨斯的威柯，父亲是一位房地产公司主管。史蒂夫5岁时随父母来到加利福尼亚定居。 　　7岁的时候他在一出学校剧中首次接触表演，1963年高中毕业后，他进入加州州立大学学习哲学，但很快就把注意力转向表演，转学到洛杉矶的加州大学主修戏剧，没多久他又想成为一名喜剧作家，再次辍学，并前往纽约加入了奈瓦福特剧院。 　　60年代末到70年代，他先后为《The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour》、《The Ray Stevens Show》、《Half the George Kirby Comedy Hour》和《The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour》等电视节目撰写剧本，并担任过《周六夜现场》的客串主持，他极富创新和充满嘲弄的幽默感让他迅速蹿红为人们熟悉的明星。 　　1977年和1978年的喜剧专辑《Let’s Get Small》和《A Wild and Crazy Guy》分别赢得两项艾美奖，为史蒂夫取得事业初期的胜利。作为成功的作家，马丁参与创作、获过艾美奖的《The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour》让评论家们赞叹不已，他1975年的电视电影《Van Dyke and Company》剧本曾获艾美奖提名。 　　1978年史蒂夫出演了银幕处女作《光芒万丈》（Sgt.
